The role of faith in humanitarian engagement

The world has always faced various challenges. However, the Christian faith is a source of motivation for action in the face of them. Based on the commandment to love one's neighbor and the importance of works, this article highlights how humanitarian engagement is a concrete manifestation of faith in action.

In a world that faces challenges such as poverty, disease, violence and injustice, the Gospel message of loving your neighbor as yourself (read Mark 12:31) makes perfect sense. Indeed, the Christian faith instills a profound motivation to make a difference wherever we find ourselves.

For Christians, faith is not just an abstract belief; it must be expressed into concrete action. Here is what the Bible says about it: “In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead” (James 2:17). In this way, faith becomes a driving power, motivating us to act with love and devotion.

Humanitarian engagement is one of the most powerful manifestations of this faith in action. Christian organizations - and Christians in general - are called to respond to the needs of others, to relieve suffering and to help build a more just world (Read Matthew 25:40). This commitment is based on an essential conviction: every life has value and deserves to be lived with dignity.

Vision trip to Nigeria: a testimony of faith in action

Gisèle, our intern in charge of communication and mobilization at SIM Switzerland, had the opportunity to travel to Nigeria to discover the work being done there. Here is her testimony:

“During my recent trip to Nigeria, I had the opportunity to meet people sent by SIM to the north of the country. These people have chosen to dedicate their lives to serving local communities through various ministries and projects. Whether it's schools, hospitals or aid centers for the most vulnerable, they don't hesitate to reach out to people in need to give them hope in Jesus Christ.”

These people provide humanitarian aid while sharing the Gospel; they make a daily effort to embody the love of Jesus. Their faith and commitment are not only a source of inspiration, but also a personal encouragement to reflect on what we can do on our own level, no matter who we are or where we are.

We all have a role to play

Gospel-inspired humanitarian engagement is a calling that concerns all of us. There are many ways in which you can contribute and support.
